Overview

Develop your ability to create, facilitate and assess small group training interventions. If you complete the Evidence Portfolio you will receive a Statement of Attainment in the following Units of Competency:
ENV401A - Work effectively in vocational education & training
DES402A - Design & develop learning programs
DEL402A - Facilitate group-based learning
ASS401A - Plan and organize assessment
ASS402A - Assess competence


Audience

Managers, frontline managers and team leaders in all areas of the organisation who need to lead change and ensure the effective implementation of small scale training projects and groups.

Course Objectives

To provide frontline managers with critical skills in planning, preparing, delivering, assessing and improving small-group training interventions. This know-how is core to organisational success given the effectiveness of such training in adult learning situations. Managers will learn the latest delivery methodologies and how to create effective training materials to overcome learning barriers such as negative inertia.

Course Outline
Day 1
  • Set objectives – learn new techniques in delivering short sessions
  • Understand the training cycle – plan, design, deliver, assess and evaluate training
  • What is competence based learning and how do we define competence
  • How to write courses up into outcomes to allow for postcourse measurement
  • Adult learning principles and how we ensure that adults remain motivated
  • The barriers to learning and how to overcome them
  • The roles and responsibilities of the trainer / facilitator
  • What are the different learning styles and how to accommodate all learners in the training room environment?
  • Plan and promote a training program – determine training needs and find out the current competencies of the group
  • Identify the gap between the required competencies and the learner’s current competencies
  • Appropriate delivery approach and activities
  • What factors need to be considered when planning a series of training sessions – level of performance and underpinning knowledge and skills?
  • The importance of planning the training session according to the outcomes required
  • Develop learning materials that suit the program outcomes
  • Customise existing materials to suit the requirements of the group
  • Select appropriate activities that could be included in the training session
Day 2
  • Deliver training effectively through using effective communication techniques
  • Determine and avoid the barriers to communication
  • Use effective listening techniques to respond to learners
  • Provide constructive feedback to learners
  • Make use of questioning techniques
  • Establish a positive learning environment
  • Introduce the training session and ensure the structure of the session with a body and a conclusion
  • Deal with difficult learners
  • Include a variety of training activities such as oral presentations, simulated activities, project work, group activities, practical demonstrations, assignments, role plays, discussion and written activities
  • Work with group dynamics and polish facilitation skills
  • Develop learning activities such as brain-storming, buzz pairs, debates, oral reports, quizzes
  • Develop visual aids to be used in the sessions
  • Utilise various games, ice-breakers and other activities in the training room
  • Ensure that learners actively participate and are able to remember the skills and knowledge trained
  • Review the outcomes of the training and self evaluate
  • Prepare and deliver a session to learners and receive feedback from the Management Consultancy International facilitator
  • Possible option – to video the trainers and to provide feedback
Day 3
  • What is competency-based assessment?
  • The purpose of assessment
  • The types of assessment
  • Planning for assessment – the steps needed for effective assessment
  • Determine what evidence is and know the rules of evidence
  • Making a judgment of competence
  • What are the principles of assessment?
  • What is the code of practice for assessors and attitudes and behaviours of assessors?
  • Devise assessment tools that are applicable and suitable for the learners
  • Review assessment methods and determine what procedure suits the learner
  • Keeping records and using the appropriate documentation
  • Understand the assessment process and all the elements needed for effective assessment
  • Give instructions to the learner about how they will be assessed
  • Assessing knowledge as well as practical application of skills
  • Make the assessment decision and document correctly
  • De-brief the learner on their assessment result
  • Review the training cycle and self-evaluate against set criteria
  • Analyse feedback from learners and make adjustments
  • Report and feedback to management
  • Make recommendations and set in place an action plan for improvements
  • Summary and final learning from the train the train program
  • Action plan for moving forward
